Silicone Scar Treatment Guide: How to Use Silagen Gel & Sheeting

Silicone is one of the most widely recommended approaches for improving the appearance of scars. Whether you’re treating a new scar after a procedure or looking to improve an existing one, Silagen silicone sheeting and gel help soften, smooth, and visibly reduce scars over time.

This guide walks you through when to start, how to use each format, and how to get the best possible results from your Silagen routine.

Silagen Silicone Gel Guide

Silagen Gel delivers medical-grade silicone to help improve the appearance of scars over time. This flexible format can be used day or night to support smoother, softer, and more even-looking skin.

When to Use

Begin using Silagen Gel once the wound has fully healed or sutures have been removed. Do not apply to open wounds.

Silagen Gel can be used at any time as part of your scar care routine. It is ideal for areas where flexibility is needed, such as the face, joints, or uneven surfaces, and can be used during the day or at night. During the day, using a Silagen Silicone Gel with SPF can help protect the scar from sun exposure, which is important for minimizing discoloration and supporting optimal healing.

How It Works

Silagen Gel delivers medical-grade silicone to the surface of the skin, forming a breathable barrier that helps maintain hydration and support a balanced healing environment.

It is the silicone in both Silagen Gel and Silagen Sheeting that helps improve the appearance of scars—softening, smoothing, and reducing discoloration over time.

Application

  • Wash and thoroughly dry the area before each application
  • Apply a very small amount to create a thin layer over the scar
  • Gently massage into the skin
  • Allow to dry completely (typically 1 to 2 minutes)
  • Once dry, it may be covered with cosmetics, sunscreen, clothing, or bandages
  • Apply two to three times daily
  • Reapply after bathing, swimming, or exercising

Important: Do not apply Silagen Gel under silicone sheeting, as this will reduce adhesiveness.

Wear Time

  • Silagen Gel should remain on the skin for 12 to 24 hours per day
  • The more time silicone remains in contact with the scar, the greater the benefit
  • Use consistently for a minimum of 2 months
  • Continued improvement may be seen with use up to 6 months

For Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, apply to a small area for 1 to 2 days first. If no irritation occurs, continue use on the full scar area.

Product Lifespan

A 0.5 oz bottle typically lasts about 3 months when treating a small scar (approximately 3 inches).

SCAR LENGTH
Up to 3 inches: 1 bottle
4 inches to 6 inches: 2 bottles
7 inches to 9 inches: 3 bottles
10 inches to 12 inches: 4 bottles

Routine & Best Practices

Silagen Gel and Silagen Sheeting can both be used to improve the appearance of scars, but should not be used at the same time.

Many people choose to alternate formats, such as using sheeting during the day and gel at night, to maintain consistent silicone contact and support continuous care.

Storage

Store Silagen Gel in a cool, dry place when not in use.

Silagen Silicone Sheeting Strips, and Shapes Guide

Silagen Silicone Sheeting provides continuous silicone coverage to help improve the appearance of scars. Designed for extended wear, it helps support smoother, flatter, and less visible scars over time.

When to Use

Begin using Silagen once the wound has fully healed or sutures have been removed. Do not apply to open wounds.

How It Works

Silagen Silicone Strips, Shapes, and Sheeting improves the appearance of scars through a combination of occlusion, hydration, and gentle pressure. This creates an optimal environment that helps regulate collagen production and reduce excessive scar tissue formation.

As a result, scars appear flatter, softer, and less noticeable over time.

Application

  • Remove Silagen from the package
  • If needed, trim the sheet so it extends at least ½ inch beyond the area being treated
  • Cleanse and thoroughly dry the skin before each application
  • Make sure the scar area is free of creams, lotions, ointments (including Silagen Gel), or perfumes - If Silagen sheeting comes in contact with creams, lotions, ointment or perfumes, it can lose adhesiveness.
  • Peel off the release liner and apply adhesive side down directly onto the scar

Although Silagen is self-adhesive, it may be secured with medical-grade tape, a pressure sleeve, or another preferred method if needed.

Keep the original packaging for storage. When not in use, store flat, backing side down.

Fit & Customization

Silagen strips and sheets can be trimmed to fit any scar. For best results, cut the sheet so it extends about ½ inch beyond the edges of the scar.

Wear Time

  • Wear Silagen daily for 10 to 16 hours
  • The more time the silicone is in contact with the scar, the greater the benefit
  • Remove at least once every 12 hours to inspect and cleanse the area
  • Use consistently for a minimum of 2 months
  • Continued improvement may occur with use up to 6 months
  • Remove before showering, bathing, or swimming

Day vs. Night Use

Silagen sheeting is often worn during the day, as movement at night may cause shifting or reduced adhesion.

Silagen Gel can be used at any time and is often applied at night or on areas where flexibility is needed. Many people alternate between the two formats to maintain consistent silicone coverage.

Tip: Many people alternate sheeting during the day and gel at night for continuous care.

Cleaning

If the sheet becomes dirty or loses adhesiveness:

  • Gently wash with tap water and use Silagen CLEAN Foaming Cleanser or a mild dish soap like Dawn.
  • Allow to air dry completely before reapplying
  • Silagen recommends cleaning it every 2 to 3 days.

Latex-Free

Silagen Silicone Strips, Shapes, and Sheeting are made from medical-grade silicone and contain no natural rubber latex.

For Sensitive Skin

Begin with 4 hours per day for the first 4 days, monitoring for irritation. If well tolerated, increase wear time by 2 hours each day until full use is reached.

Product Lifespan

  • Each piece typically lasts up to 3 to 4 weeks with proper care
  • Replace if the sheet begins to deteriorate, disintegrate, or no longer adheres properly

IMPORTANT: Because we cannot monitor products used at home, we are unable to replace sheeting due to loss of adhesiveness. If needed, the sheet can be secured with medical-grade tape or a pressure sleeve.

Storage

  • Store unused Silagen in its container and store it in a cool, dry place when not in use.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying too early
Do not use Silagen on open wounds.
Always wait until the skin is fully healed and sutures have been removed.
  • Using products under sheeting
Creams, lotions, ointments (including Silagen Gel), or perfumes can interfere with adhesion and reduce effectiveness.
Always apply sheeting to clean, dry skin.
  • Using gel and sheeting at the same time
Silagen Gel should not be used under silicone sheeting. Use one format at a time to maintain proper performance.
  • Inconsistent use
Silicone therapy requires consistency. Skipping days or wearing for too few hours can limit results.
  • Not wearing long enough each day
For best results, aim for extended daily wear. The more time silicone stays in contact with the scar, the greater the benefit.
  • Not cleaning the sheeting properly
Buildup can reduce adhesiveness. Clean regularly and allow the sheet to fully dry before reapplying.
  • Expecting immediate results
Scar improvement takes time. Most visible results develop with consistent use over several weeks to months.
